Liquid Battery May Solve Solar Energy Storage Needs
Researchers at MIT have designed a battery composed of all-liquid active materials. Professor Donald Sadoway and his team have developed a liquid battery prototype that is able to quickly absorb large amounts of electricity. "No one had been able to get their arms around the problem of energy storage on a massive scale for the power grid," says Sadoway. "We're literally looking at a battery capable of storing the grid." The liquid battery could be a promising solution for storing solar energy that is affordable and efficient.

Austin City Council Approves 30-MW Solar Power Plant
The Austin (TX) City Council approved a 30-MW solar power plant Thursday, choosing Gemini Solar Development Co. to build the site for Austin Energy, the area's municipal electric utility. The plant will be constructed on 300 acres of city-owned land located approximately 25 miles east of town.
The 30-MW PV array, which will be equipped with thousands of Suntech crystalline-silicon modules, should be operational by the end of 2010 and provide enough electricity to power 5000 homes.

Solar Refrigeration: A Hot Idea for Cooling
Austin Solar AC is highlighted in the latest issue of Scientific American in an article by Duane Schrag. Solar refrigeration is relatively inexpensive and can be very efficient. The basic principle of making cold out of hot is the same for thermal solar air conditioners as it is for solar refrigerators.

Federal Solar Tax Credits Extended, US Poised to Become Largest Solar Market in the World
The thirty percent federal investment tax credit for residential and commerical solar installations has been extended for 8 years with the passing of legislation included in H.R. 1424, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. According to SEIA president Rhone Resch, “This bill is a major step in our long journey toward energy independence and ensures that solar energy will be a significant part of America’s energy future.”

Beijing Olympic Village Powered by Solar Energy
The Beijng Olympic Village buildings feature solar heat, solar hot water, solar thermoelectric cogeneration and intelligent control devices. The Village is projected to draw 7.89 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy from the Sun during the Olympic Games.

MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power: storing energy for use when the sun doesn't shine. MIT researchers have hit upon a simple, inexpensive, highly efficient process for storing solar energy requiring nothing but abundant, non-toxic natural materials.

Austin Solar Air Conditioning, Inc. today announced they are in development of a thermal solar air conditioning system utilizing parabolic trough solar technology. The Austin Solar AC system does not require electricity to run a conventional compressor and does not use Freon. Austin Solar AC products help people cool down without damaging the environment and with significant cost savings. The systems also provide space heating and hot water.
